I have been working in Japanese Government as Congress for 34 years and I am also the Chairman of the Fuka Sasenai no Kai or the “Unforgotten Sacrifices of War” a non-profit organization established to promote peace and understanding from the sacrifices of war
The ending of WWII saw Guam returned to the United States as a territorial possession.
For over 70 years, there have been memorial services for the many lives lost in WW2, but only a few years ago was there a ceremony which included representatives of the Japan Government along with the U.S. and Guam government and hosted by Japan which continues annually on your beautiful island of Guam. Our latest accomplishment in the continuation of the promotion of Peace is the erection of the Guam Chinkon Shrine (Guam Sea of Souls Shrine) on July of 2017, located at the Adelup Park or the west side of the Governors office of Guam.
The Guam people are known for their kindness and open hearts. This is demonstrated daily with the many Japanese visitors who come to Guam to enjoy the tropical paradise.
While this feeling of friendship is well known among civilians, we feel the reconciliation needs to continue and grow at the highest government levels.
It is our hope that we can continue to bring our governments and our people a bit closer to the realization that while mistakes were made in the past, forgiveness and acceptance are the two methods necessary for mankind to move forward.
Regardless of our personal beliefs and perspectives, we cannot deny that the many who died defending their country were heroes. They were given a job to do, and they gave their lives to honor their commitment.
In order to continue our mission of peace, we are asking our people of Japan and also the people of Guam, to join us in becoming a member of our NPO, for we know that strength is in numbers and especially coming together as one people.
Best wishes,
Takeo Hiranuma
